Generalities

Organ and tissue loss through disease and injury motivate the development of therapies that can regenerate tissues and decrease reliance on transplantations. Regenerative medicine, an interdisciplinary field that applies engineering and life science principles to promote regeneration, can potentially restore diseased and injured tissues and whole organs. Since the inception of the field several decades ago, a number of regenerative medicine therapies, including those designed for wound healing and orthopedics applications, have received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval and are now commercially available.

Refractory Angina

A meta-analysis published in 2018, with 304 patients, reported improvement of exercise tolerance and frequency of angina attacks at three, six and twelve months, as well as a reduction in mortality at two years. There are different techniques for obtaining stem cells. EmbMany patients with heart failure are exposed to a long process of cardiac muscle destruction, which does not allow restoring heart function, despite optimal medical and surgical management.

In a recent review of 9 studies, which included 612 patients with heart failure, improvement in clinical and paraclinical parameters was found, evaluated for an average of 9 months. The authors conclude that stem cells are an effective therapy for the treatment of heart failure, improving the prognosis and exercise capacity of patients.
